Cease From Your Labor

Today is Labor Day - the day we don't have to labor. This day provides one last long weekend which unofficially ends the summer. Labor Day is traditionally observed by picnics, swimming, baseball, family, and traffic. I trust that you and your family will have a relaxing day.

Did you know that the Scripture also invites you and me to rest from our labor? The Bible clearly teaches that salvation is by grace through faith and not as a result of any work on our part (Ephesians 2:8-9). Yet think of how many people around the world today are believing that they have to work their way into heaven. This is by far the majority religious position. In fact, sad to say, but many who call themselves Christians are relying on their own efforts to attain eternal life. This is sad because the Bible so clearly teaches otherwise. Hebrews 4:10 says, "For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works." We don't rely on our works at all. The simple fact is that I am not going to heaven because of anything I have done, am doing, or will do. I am going to heaven because of what Christ has done for me. He did the work. I'm trusting in Him.

So, I hope that this Labor Day while you rest from your physical labor, you also are rejoicing in the rest we have in Christ. If you are still trusting in your works, Jesus has an invitation for you. He said, "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28)."
