The Good Shepherd

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is John 10:11. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.”

Jesus said He is the good shepherd. Literally it reads, “I am the shepherd; the good one.” Jesus is the only good shepherd.

And what sets Him apart is His love for the sheep. The supreme demonstration of that love was seen when He laid down His life for the sheep.

He laid it down voluntarily, willingly, sacrificially.

He laid it down for, or in place of, or for the benefit of the sheep. He was a substitute, taking on Himself the wrath that sinners deserved.

And it was His life that He laid down. It required His infinite life to pay the infinite debt of my sin.

Jesus is the shepherd, the good one. He loves the sheep.
